Books from Africa

Hi friends,

I am doing thing.

The thing is, I will be reading books from every country in Africa in the next 2 years, hopefully I finish this challenge sooner.

What do I mean by “from?”

This means I will be reading books by African authors specifically from that country, OR books about that country. I would prefer that the author is from and writing about the country in which they belong to, but either would work.

Why am I doing this?

A few weeks ago I was discussing with someone about African literature and I realized that all my references were books from Ghana and Nigeria. We were discussing how these authors kind of write for their own people and sometimes they don’t really explain traditions and the country’s history. I was telling this individual that, I think that if an author was going to mention a historical event, then it was their duty to give us a sufficient amount of information concerning that event. Her argument was that, NO, it was up to the reader to investigate things mentioned in the book if it interested the individual. I gave it a lot of thought, and I agree with the individual I was talking to. Authors can’t do all the work for us, it is up to us research and read on things we are ignorant about. So that is the aim of this challenge. I am curious about other countries in Africa besides Ghana and Nigeria. I also think it will be interesting to discover the different style of writings and topics each country care about.
